Reading Workshop
This Week
We are beginning to research our science and technology leaders in preparation for our research project breakfast.
We Have Learned
We have worked very hard to become independent readers this year. We have learned to select books that interest us and are a good fit. This means that book fits our purpose for reading AND our understanding of text. We know that depending our purpose, we may have to read a text that is a little more challenging or light and easy. Understanding our purpose for reading is just one step in developing ourselves as readers.
We have also learned that interest plays an important role in our understanding of text. There is an indescribable power in a desire to learn that is rooted in interest. Whether we want to learn more about a character and his/her actions or an interesting topic, it is our interest that drives our desire to learn. The difficultly of text will vary based on our interest level in it. We are more eager to problem solve through texts that interest us than those that do not. It is for this reason, I always survey my students at the beginning of the year to understand their reading interests. With the help of surveys, I can help students learn to become stronger readers by using texts that interest them. Check out this survey I plan to use next year.
If your child appears to be reluctant or is having problems with reading, I suggest starting by asking, "Is he/she reading something that is interesting to him/her?". Choice is very important in reading engagement, which affects comprehension. It always amazes me how sometimes you can change a child's reading outlook and success just by offering choice and an opportunity to read something that interests to him/her. Unfortunately, we do not always have a choice in reading, but by learning about different purposes, genres, and strategies of reading, we can still be successful even when we do not have a choice or interest in the text.
