I enjoyed meeting everyone who made it out to Meet the Teacher last week and looking forward to meeting everyone else soon. I KNOW this is going to be a great year.

New Blog Assignment for Students

Here is the latest blog assignment (the first of 2012):
For this blog assignment, you need to read the directions very carefully.

1. Tell us the text you are reading and why you chose it.

2. Write a short summary of the text without giving away the ending. Remember, a summary is different from a retelling because it is only looking for the most important who, what, when, where, and why. 

3. Make a text recommendation. What type of person would also like to read this book? 

4. Rate your text on a scale from 1 to 5. A 1 means you really didn’t like it. A 5 means you thought the text was great. Don’t forget to tell us the because, because, because!

Remember, you can start your blog now and add comments to it later.

This could end up being one or more blog posts. I encourage you to blog about what comes to your mind as you read. Check my blog regularly, so you can see how I am completing this assignment.

Stay tuned to read about the book I’m reading this week. (I’ll make sure to read a book I can recommend to you this week.)

Here's a look at what we will be doing this week:

 Language Arts  

*Reading: We will be looking at Question-Answer Relationships (QAR). We will be reviewing summarizing.  

*Writing: We will be writing introductions and conclusions for our informational writing and also working on peer conferencing.  

*Word Study: Each group will receive a new sort this week. We will also be understanding the "Bossy R" (r-controlled vowels: ar, er, ir, ur, or), as a class.  

Math

*This week will be working on graphing: creating them and answering questions about them. We will be focusing on the vocabulary words: scale, interval, mode, and range.

 Science  

*We planted today and we will hopefully observe our plants' growth over the week. We will also discuss bees and pollination. We will look at the unique relationships bees and plants have with each other.

Social Studies

*We will be reviewing our unit and testing later this week. A completed study guide will come home tomorrow.  

Couple of Reminders and Important Tidbits:
*Please return the National Boards permission form for me. I will try to scan one and post it on the website in case your child's has gone missing.
*We will have a practice spelling bee on Tuesday. All students will participate in the practice.
*We will have our official bee on Wednesday. I will take pictures of participants, finalists, and the winner and share them with parents since our bee will be closed to visitors. Thanks for understanding!
