Top Ways to Foster Indendent Reading

I strive to make independent reading a priority in my classroom. A lot of factors come to play in getting students interested in reading independently. A good indication that a child enjoys or wants to participate in independent reading is that he/she select books on his/her own and pick them up without having to be asked. If your child is struggling to pick up books around your house, you may want to talk to him/her about what type of reading interests him/her. I find that in third grade it is important for children to have a great deal of choice in their reading selections -- even if we don't deem it "high quality" reading. REMEMBER -- regardless of the quality, they are reading something AND that is the first step.The following link provides more information about fostering independent reading:
